Did you know that the nominal size of your air filter is probably not the same as the actual size? Just like measurements on lumber, the actual size of an air filter is usually slightly smaller than the nominal size.

Discount filters for Air Bear furnaces come in a number of sizes and varieties. While Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) discount filters designed specifically for a particular Air Bear unit will meet the manufacturer's specifications, non-OEM discount filters will work just as well if they are the same dimensions. These non-OEM discount filters can be obtained with a MERV rating up to 15. While factory original filters and non-OEM MERV 15 discount filters will remove lint and dust, dust mite debris, pollen and mold spores, a non-OEM MERV 15 discount filter will also remove automobile emissions, smoke, pet dander, circulating bacteria, and tobacco smoke.

OEM discount filters are rated MERV 8, meaning they will remove 70 - 84.9 percent of common household dust and airborne particulates when operating at peak efficiency. This is considerably more effective than common household furnace filters, which typically remove far less contaminants from the air. Discount filters with higher MERV ratings are particularly effective in households inhabited by persons who suffer from chronic asthma or acute reactions to airborne allergens such as mold, pet allergies, or hay fever.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) discount filters have a standard recommended replacement rate of six months. Non-OEM filters may have a recommended replacement schedule of up to nine months. While the filters that work in Air Bear appliances may have a published replacement rate of between six and nine months, regular inspections should be conducted to ensure that a home is receiving the maximum benefit.
