These filters are sold by nominal size rather than actual size. A customer with an existing filter that needs replacing can find its nominal size inscribed on the filter's frame or on the original packaging. Lacking that, an actual measurement can be made with the size being rounded up to the nearest inch.

Discount Carrier filters are rated according to their Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) which ranges from 1 to 16. Many home filters are rated between MERV 1 and MERV 4, and remove only a small proportion of circulating, airborne particulate matter. The Carrier filter matches or exceeds those ratings in order to efficiently remove both visible and microscopic particles that can affect indoor air quality.

Regular filter inspection is required to ensure that filters operate as intended.
