Maytag recommends replacing fridge filters every six months or so to ensure healthy drinking and cooking water. Depending on your water filter capacity, the indicator inside your refrigerator should alert you when the water filter needs to be changed. If your water starts to display an increase in opacity and has started to smell, replace the water filter immediately.
