What are MERV ratings and what do they mean in regards to air filters? MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This term is used when describing air filter performance levels. The MERV rating ranges from lowest to highest in terms of filtration level. This means a low MERV rating filters out fewer particles than a filter with a high MERV rating. Different individuals and households need different MERV ratings to reduce allergens, create cleaner air, or even improve HVAC airflow.
