Here are some tips for both yourself and your home’s fridge and air conditioning filters:
- This may seem like common sense, but it’s important to know that the best way to stay hydrated is from drinking plenty of water. Avoid drinks with caffeine, sugar, or alcohol that can make you lose fluids faster and cause dehydration. Remember not to wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water, at that point you have already started to become dehydrated and can be too late. The summer months bring higher consumption rates of water. This means you should check your homes refrigerator water filter and see if it needs to be changed. Upon realizing that its time to replace your filter you can find cheap refrigerator filters that work just as well as their OEM (Original Equipment manufacturer) counter parts, at Discount Filters. It will help ensure you have clean, chlorine reduced, great tasting water, and ice to keep you hydrated and going strong in the heat!
- Limit your outdoor activity to the morning and evening hours. If you are physically active be sure to consume two to four glasses of water per hour. Try to avoid the outdoors during peak temperatures, but be sure to wear loose-fitting, light weight, and light color clothing if you can’t avoid it. Also, be sure to apply sunscreen, SPF 15 or greater, to protect yourself from the suns harmful UV rays. It is important to carefully watch infants, adults 65+, and individuals with mental illnesses when out in the heat, as they are effected by the heat and more vulnerable to illness.
Shelter & Air Conditioning:
- Be sure to seek shelter that is cool and air-conditioned. Once temperatures get into the 90’s, fans will not prevent heat-related illnesses. So going somewhere like the local library, mall, or the pool will help you stay cool and prevent heat-related issues. If, however, you’re fortunate enough to have air-conditioning in your home, it’s important to remember to take care of it. You will be running the air a lot in the summer months so make sure to check your air conditioning filter to see if they need replaced. Old air filters cause your HVAC system to work harder and makes it less efficient, costing you more money. Also, if you or someone in your family has allergy’s it’s good to check to see if your filter is the correct MERV rating to help eliminate allergens in your house for certain individuals.
Don’t Leave Them Behind:
- Never leave anyone in a closed parked car. Your car becomes like a greenhouse and the temperature inside a parked car can increase 30% within a half hour. Pets are even more susceptible to the heat because of their inability to produce sweat and cool themselves. Even on a day that you think it’s safe to leave them in the car while you run errands because you think, “you’ll only be a couple of minutes” can lead to deadly consequences that are totally preventable!
