Know Your Fridge Filter: SBS002

Do you know what’s in your unfiltered tap water supply? On its journey from natural sources to water treatment facilities and to your home, your home’s water supply has the potential to be contaminated by a variety of substances. The easy solution to this problem is by using a refrigerator water filter like the SBS002 to remove harsh impurities from your tap water.  Built as an aftermarket replacement for the Whirlpool 4396508 fridge filter, the SBS002 fits into a variety of brands and models including Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Amana, and Thermador. Enjoy the peace of mind of having pure, better-tasting drinking water in your home with the SBS002 fridge filter.

How Does It Work?glass of 4396508 filtered water

Just how exactly does the SBS002 filter work? The answer is activated carbon.  Inside the filter cartridge of the SBS002 fridge filter, there is a cylindrical chamber that contains an extremely porous form of carbon called “activated carbon.”  Because of its increased surface area, activated carbon is able to capture more unwanted substances in your water supply.   The water filtration process begins when water is pushed into the filter from your home’s tap water line.  As the water pass through the cartridge, it comes into contact with the activated carbon inside the filter.  From here, the activated carbon attracts and captures any undesirable substance that may be in your tap water.  These substances can include mold, bacteria, lead, cysts, and even rust. After the activated carbon does its job, clean water is pushed back up through the top of the filter and is made available to drink.  This entire process occurs in a matter of seconds!

How to Install the SBS002 Filter

Installing your SBS002 replacement filter isn’t difficult. First, locate your filter cartridge. The SBS002 is typically located in the grille at the bottom of the refrigerator.  Replace your filter whenever the indicator light turns red or if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases.  For refrigerators without an indicator light, replace your water filter every six months.  Now that you’ve located your filter, follow these simple steps:

  • Turn off your icemaker.
  • Rotate cap of filter a quarter turn counter-clockwise and remove the old filter.
  • Remove the cartridge grille cap by sliding it off of the end of the old cartridge.
  • The grille cap may then be placed onto the new filter cartridge
  • With the new cartridge cap in the vertical position, insert the filter into the base grille.
  • Rotate the cap clockwise to a horizontal position until the new filter locks in.

Remember to always flush 2-3 gallons of water through the filter before use to remove any remaining sediment in the filter.  From here you can turn your icemaker back on and enjoy better-tasting, healthy drinking water at any time.

Remember to Change Your Filter

Now that your filter has been properly installed and is working to provide your home with clean water, you never have to worry about drinking dirty water again! Well, filters don’t last forever.  Over continual use, unfiltered tap water passing through the filter can begin to degrade the carbon filter inside the cartridge.  This means that over extended use, the carbon can lose its efficacy and you may receive a drop in water quality.  This can open up the possibility of potential health and maintenance concerns.  This is easily preventable by making sure that you change your filter whenever the indicator light says to, or every six months if your refrigerator doesn’t have an indicator light.  Performing routine filter changes ensures that your home is always supplied with only the clearest, refreshingly healthy drinking water.
