Know Your Fridge Filter: EG-1

ge mwf replacementNobody wants to drink dirty water, so why not provide your home with crystal clear, healthy drinking water? With the EG-1 refrigerator water filter, better-tasting, pathogen-free tap water can be available to you at your fingertips.  Designed as an aftermarket replacement for the GE MWF water filter, the EG-1 is a cost-effective alternative that helps reduce chlorine taste, chlorine odor, and other foreign contaminants that can enter your tap water supply.  This replacement filter is compatible in a variety of brands and models including Hotpoint, GE, and Kenmore.  The EG-1 fridge filter has a 300 gallon capacity and 0.5 gallon per minute flow rate.  Utilizing this filtration tool in your home can provide your household with refreshingly clean drinking water at all times.

Behind the Scenes

Using a scientifically tested filtration method, the EG-1 water filter replacement is able to remove undesirable impurities from your home water supply. How does it do this? The answer is activated carbon.  Activated carbon is an extremely porous form of the mineral that has an exponentially higher surface area.  The increased surface area of activated carbon allows the EG-1 filter to capture and hold foreign contaminants that pass through the filter chamber.

As water flows into the filter from your water line, the unfiltered tap water comes into contact with a block of activated carbon in an inner chamber inside the filter cartridge.  The carbon captures undesirable particulate as clean water is allowed to pass through the filter.  The now pathogen-free water is then pushed back out of the filter and is then available for consumption.  This entire process occurs in a matter of seconds!

Installation Help

To install your new EG-1 filter, simply follow these steps:

  1. Locate your water filter cartridge typically located in the back upper right corner of the refrigerator compartment.
  2. Turn the filter cartridge a half turn counter clockwise until you feel a release and remove.
  3. Fill the new replacement filter with tap water to allow for better flow immediately following installation
  4. Insert the top of the new cartridge into the cartridge holder and turn slowly clockwise until the filter locks in.

Be sure not to overturn the filter cartridge. The cartridge will automatically raise itself into position as you turn the cartridge.  Once your filter is completely installed, you should run about 1-2 gallons of water (3-4 minutes) through the dispenser to clear the system and prevent sputtering.  If your refrigerator has a reset water filter button, press and hold.

Change Your Fridge Filter

Now that you can enjoy clean water at all times, you should know that your EG-1 filter will not last forever.  As a water filter undergoes continual use, the carbon chamber will begin to degrade and lose its efficacy.  This can lead to a potential drop in water quality. You should replace your filter once the red indicator light goes off or if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases. If your fridge does not have an indicator light, change your filter at least once every six months.  This is best way to ensure that your home is always provided with healthy, better-tasting drinking water and ice.
