Unfiltered tap water has the potential to cause contamination and health issues in your home. Protect your home’s water supply and enjoy clean, healthy water with the filtration power of the 9996 refrigerator water filter. This replacement water filter efficiently removes undesirable substances from tap water providing your household with better-tasting, refreshingly clear drinking water and ice. Built as an aftermarket replacement filter for the GE MWF water filter, the 9996 fridge filter replacement is compatible with a variety of popular refrigerator brands and models such as GE, Hotpoint, and Kenmore. With a 300 gallon capacity and the ability to produce clean water at 0.5 gallons per minute, this filter is an effective tool to enjoy clean drinking water at all times.
How It All Works
The 9996 water filter utilizes a tried and tested filtration method to remove harsh impurities from your home’s tap water supply. Chlorine taste, odor, and other foreign contaminants that can potentially enter your drinking water are all removed with the filtration power of activated carbon. Activated carbon is an extremely porous form of the mineral that has an increased amount of surface area. This extra surface area makes the material an excellent filtration tool that can capture and hold unwanted substances in your tap water.
As water begins to rush into the filter chamber of the 9996 water filter, the activated carbon begins to work its magic. Unfiltered water passes over a block of activated carbon in an inner chamber of the filter and unwanted contaminants are captured and held. Clean water is then pushed back out of the filter and is available for consumption. Now you can enjoy healthy, pathogen-free drinking water and ice at your leisure.

Installation Process
Installing your new 9996 fridge filter is a simple process that can be done in a matter of minutes. First, locate your fridge filter cartridge. The water filter cartridge is located in the back upper right corner of the refrigerator compartment. The filter cartridge should be replaced when the replacement indicator light turns red or if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases. For refrigerators without an indicator light – replace the filters every 6 months.
- Remove old filter cartridge by grasping and turning to the left about 1/2 turn
- Fill the replacement filter with water from the tap to allow for better flow immediately after installation
- Place the top of the new cartridge up inside the cartridge holder
- Slowly turn the filter until the filter cartridge stops. Do not over tighten. As you turn the cartridge it will automatically raise itself into position. The cartridge will move about 1/2 turn
- Run water from the dispenser for 3 minutes (about 1-1/2 gallons) to clear the system and prevent sputtering
- Press and hold reset water filter button if your fridge has one
Once your filter is completely installed, you should run water through the filter for about 3-4 minutes (1-2 gallons) to clear the system and prevent sputtering.
Why You Need to Change Your Filter
The 9996 filter provides your home with refreshingly healthy and better-tasting drinking water, but the filter will not last forever. It is important to remember to perform routine filter changes so that you never have to worry about a drop in water quality. As more water passes through the filter, it will begin to degrade the carbon causing it to lose its efficacy. Ensure that your home is always equipped to produce crystal clear water by changing your fridge filter when the indicator light goes off, or at least once every six months.
