Know Your Fridge Filter T2WG2

If you’re a homeowner, you know how important it is to have access to clean drinking water. Unfortunately, most drinking water provided to households is anything but crystal clear. Depending on where you live, the water being piped into your home could be full of contaminants ranging from dirt and other particulate matter to chlorine to bacteria and mold. These contaminants can do anything from simply making your water taste bad to actually causing illness. While you could purchase cases of bottled water for your family to drink and cook with, that is both expensive and generates copious amounts of waste. In order to both save money and keep your family healthy, it is important to have a good water filter installed in your refrigerator.

The T2WG2 water filter is a refrigerator water filter that is compatible with the Whirlpool EDR3RXD1-3 OEM water filter. It is designed for side-by-side refrigerators manufactured by brands such as Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana, among others. The filter utilizes activated carbon to attract and trap impurities within it, while allowing only the freshest, best tasting water to exit for drinking, cooking, and ice making. As long as the filter is replaced every six months, the taste and quality of the filtered water will never decrease.

So How Does the Filter Actually Work to Remove Contaminants?Whirlpool EDR3RXD1 - 3

The secret lies in the activated carbon it contains. Activated carbon is carbon that has been specially treated to be more porous, increasing the material’s surface area and allowing it to hold more foreign material than regular carbon could. Impurities are drawn to the carbon by the process of adsorption, which is the adherence of dissolved solids, liquids, and gases to a surface.

Your home’s water supply line attaches in the rear of your refrigerator, so it also fills the T2WG2 filter from the rear. As the water passes through the filter’s main chamber, the activated carbon attracts any and all impurities contained in it. These impurities could be chemicals such as chlorine or lead, sediment or other earth-based solids, or even bacteria and mold. Once it passes through the filter, the now-clean water can then travel to either your refrigerator’s ice or water dispenser, providing purified ice and water for your family.

Installing the T2WG2 Water Filter

Installing the T2WG2 water filter is really easy. While different brands of refrigerator may differ slightly, the common location for this filter is inside the refrigerator’s bottom grille. To change the water filter, you simply have to follow these easy steps:

1. Pull the tab in the grille forward to release the old filter.

2. Gently grasp and turn the filter a quarter-turn counterclockwise, then pull it straight out.

3. Insert the new filter and turn it a quarter-turn clockwise.

4. Press the tab to lock the filter in place.

Before you can start drinking water filtered through the new filter, you want to make sure to flush it properly. By running at least two gallons of water through the new filter, you can ensure your new filter will deliver the highest quality filtered water. To avoid wasting this ‘flushed’ water, you might use it for cleaning or watering plants.

Refrigerator Maintenance

Finally, it’s important to remember to change your filter promptly. Most refrigerator water filters will perform optimally for about six months; after that, the activated carbon will start to break down. When it does this, it will no longer be able to optimally filter the water that passes through it, meaning more impurities will reach your drinking water and ice. Some refrigerators feature a colored light system that tells you when it’s time to change the filter; green means the filter is good, yellow means you should order a new filter, and red means the filter needs to be changed. To protect your family’s health, make sure your filter is changed at least every six months.
