Top Benefits of Having a Clean Water Filter

Have you ever gone to the refrigerator, pressed the water dispenser anticipating a delicious, clear glass of water only to be awarded with strange tasting and smelling water? Or perhaps your water tastes fine, but when trying to fill a glass it seems to take forever for it to become even half-full.

If you’ve recently experienced either of these situations, it’s time to change your refrigerator water filter. The benefits of a clean fridge filter are numerous and include clean, tasty water that dispenses at an optimum flow rate.

1. Good Flow Rate

All water filters have a specific flow rate. This is the time it takes tap water to flow through the system and then dispense into a glass. Low water pressure can reduce flow rate. However, a dirty/old fridge filter more likely is the cause of reduced flow rate. A clean filter allows the water to flow at its optimum rate. This means if the flow rate is 0.5 gallons per minute, the water system should dispense about one-half gallon of water within one minute. If it’s taking three minutes, the flow rate is reduced.

2. No Contaminants

A clean refrigerator filter will remove numerous contaminants from drinking water and ice cubes. Tap water can contain microorganisms such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Both cause digestive problems such as diarrhea, stomach discomfort and vomiting in humans and animals. Filters also will remove chemical contaminants such as chlorine, which sometimes is added by municipal water supplies as a disinfectant. Other impurities lurking in tap water may include turbidity, which is caused by soil runoff, and lead, which can be leached from pipes.

3. Clean Water

A dirty or old fridge filter cannot efficiently remove contaminants from the tap water flowing through the dispensing system. Most refrigerator water filters contain carbon, which traps harmful impurities and contaminants, allowing only clean, healthy water to dispense into your glass. If your refrigerator has an indicator light, it will turn from green to yellow when the fridge filter is close to needing a change. When the filter light turns from yellow to red, change the filter to ensure your water and ice cubes continue to taste and smell good. A clean fridge filter equals clean water.

4. More Likely to Drink Water

Filtered water that tastes and smells good is more likely to be consumed regularly than other water. A typical adult male needs about 13 cups of fluid intake a day, while a typical female adult needs about 9 cups. Drinking water to meet the majority of that fluid intake is a smart way to stay healthy. Water does not contain any calories and when cleaned with a quality fridge filter, it offers a healthy alternative to sugary soft drinks.
