10 Benefits of Kitchen Range Hoods

Chances are that when you think about kitchen appliances, range hoods don’t break the top five on your list. They may not even make your list at all.

That’s because kitchen range hoods are one of the most ignored appliances out there. Yet, they’re one of the most important when it comes to your family’s health and safety.

But what exactly do kitchen range hoods do? And how do they make our homes a safer place to live?

Let’s discuss what a range hood can do for you, and look at 10 benefits they bring with them.

What Are Kitchen Range Hoods?

Also known as a vent hood or an exhaust hood, a range hood is an appliance that’s just as important to your kitchen as the refrigerator or oven.

Installed directly above your stovetop, it’s basically a motorized fan that is enclosed in a canopy.

Its role is to remove steam, heat, odors, grease particles, and gasses that the cooking process can create. These pollutants are then drawn up by the fan and funneled through a filter. Then they’re either sucked out of the house or recirculated back into the air.

Range hood filters are important features in a unit. They keep your home’s air clean and odor-free.

It’s important to note that changing your range hood’s filter regularly is a must. If not, it can increase the likelihood of grease fires or harbor unwanted bacteria growth.

Now you know what a kitchen range hood does, let’s look at several of its benefits.

1. Improves Air Quality

One of the more important benefits of a kitchen range hood is how it improves the air quality in your kitchen. It also saves any harmful elements from drifting into other parts of your house as well.

Air pollutants in the form of steam, grease, and smoke release into the air while cooking. They are then deposited around your house or inhaled by those that come into contact with it.

Humidity can also build-up, creating excess moisture in your kitchen. If not controlled, it can lead to the growth of bacteria and mold on your kitchen surfaces.

But with a range hood, these pollutants are drawn up through the filter and away from you and your home.

In turn, you’re left with cleaner air and a better environment for your home.

2. Reduces Excess Kitchen Heat

“If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen” didn’t pop up out of nowhere. Cooking can be hot business, especially if you’re cooking more than one thing at a time.

Let your kitchen range hood draw all that excess heat up and out of the room for you. No matter if the heat is coming from steam or radiating off the cooktop itself, your kitchen stays more comfortable and cooler.

It can also help save on energy bills. There’s no need to open a window and have your air conditioning go right out with it. The range hood draws out heat from that area of the kitchen and can easily turn off with a flick of a switch.

3. Removes Kitchen Odors

Fish may be your family’s favorite meal, but that doesn’t mean you want your house to smell like it for hours or even days to come.

If odors are allowed to build up while you’re cooking, they can escape to other rooms in your house. Odors can get trapped in fabrics, furniture, and even your clothes, causing them to linger around much longer than you’d like.

A range hood will draw these odors out of your house while you’re cooking. This eliminates any unpleasant buildup that can be tough to get rid of.

4. Makes Cleanup Easier

When a kitchen space isn’t properly ventilated, grease residue and smoke can build up on walls, counters, and any surface in the room.

This residue becomes sticky and attracts food particles and dust, which get trapped and can grow bacteria and mold.

If this residue is allowed to build up, it can damage many surfaces in your home.

With a range hood, the smoke and grease particles are sucked up through a filter. This helps decrease much of the sticky buildup that is so hard to remove.

You’ll find yourself cleaning less often and having less mess to clean when you do.

5. Provides More Light

Of course, it’s always better to be able to see what you’re doing while cooking, but having more light from a range hood does makes it even better.

With a lot of recipes, you need to watch the color and texture of the food you’re making. This lets you know how well the cooking process is going. By having more light, it helps prevent over or under preparing your meals.

For some of us, it lessens the likelihood of burning it all together.

The lighting can also help save on your utility bill. In most kitchens, the small range hood light bulb is all the light you need. Especially at night, instead of turning on all the other lights in the kitchen.

6. Improves Property Value

Kitchen range hoods can be the most overlooked appliance in the kitchen – that is until there isn’t one at all.

If you’re selling your home, real estate agents agree an updated kitchen with all appliances included make for an attractive feature to potential buyers. And if your range hood is missing or is an old clunky unit, home buyers could decide to look elsewhere.

Investing in the right range hood will not only improve the look and feel of your kitchen, but it will also increase your home’s property value.

Home buyers will be thankful for one less project to do and one less appliance to replace. And that can make all the difference in the sale of your home.

7. Gives Your Kitchen More Style

Gone are the days of oversized, boxy range hood units. Today’s range hoods come with quiet technology and can add style to your kitchen decor.

You’ll find that units come in hundreds of different styles and can be customized for any type of kitchen space needed. Many can blend in with the look of the kitchen or be designed as standout pieces of their own. Much like a work of art.

For modern, minimalist kitchens, there are units that can be hidden inside of the cabinet, raising up at the push of a button when needed.

8. Improves Cooking Precision

Cooking can be a precise task that requires all five of your senses. Sight and smell play a huge part in that process.

There are meals that you need to be able to smell while they’re cooking. But if there isn’t proper ventilation in your kitchen, mixtures of odors can mask the cooking process and leave you unsure which phase of cooking your meal is in.

A range hood will prevent this. Drawing out the odors and letting you get the true fragrance of your ingredients.

And again, the additional light the range hood provides lets you see where your food is in the process of cooking.

The combination of benefits will greatly aid in the precise outcome of your family’s favorite meals.

9. Increases Your Comfort

Nothing is worse than standing in front of a stove and having the hot steam, smoke, and humidity billow up into your face. It’s not like you can just walk away from it.

But with a kitchen range hood, those annoyances are sucked up and out of the way.

Not only that, it draws grease splatter through the filter, saving your clothes from tough to remove stains.

And you don’t have to worry about any overpowering smells. Those are pulled away through the motorized fan as well.

With all those nuisances gone, you no longer have to worry about your comfort level while in your kitchen. You’re left to enjoy the task at hand.

10. Reduces Carbon Monoxide

A lot of people don’t know that their kitchen appliances produce carbon monoxide. Without proper ventilation, this threat can build up and become harmful for you and your family.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, combustible gas that causes health problems. Side effects of exposure include headaches, nausea, loss of balance, shortness of breath, and loss of awareness. Too much exposure can even cause death.

The motorized fan in your kitchen range hood will draw the carbon monoxide out of the air, making it safe for everyone in the house.

Now You Can Cook with Confidence

Your home should be a safe and comfortable environment for you and your family. Now that you know how much kitchen range hoods can contribute to that, you’ll never take it for granted again.
