Four types of discount filters are available in this size. They are the MERV 8, 11 and 13 Pleated Filters and the MERV 4 rated fiberglass filters. All are high quality filters that will perform well and help increase the efficiency of any HVAC system.
Fiberglass filters are the most inexpensive filters available. They protect an HVAC system from dirt and help remove dust and pollen from the air. They do little to truly improve indoor air quality, however, and they should be changed on a monthly basis. Many people do not change fiberglass filters on time, which means they become saturated with dust and begin to strain the HVAC unit. This leads to higher utility bills and increased maintenance costs.
The pleated discount filters are an economical alternative to fiberglass filters. They last three times as long and have a much higher dust holding capacity. They also significantly improve indoor air quality. The pleats are optimally spaced and have been given an electrostatic charge to help increase their efficiency. These filters have been tested by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. They perform just as well as more expensive filters.
All of these filters can be used on any furnace that accepts a filter of this size. All filters should be inspected on a regular basis and changed whenever they become dirty.
